Do You Wanna Date my Avatar?

The Guild is a pretty funny web-series about a group of people who play a MMO (massive multiplayer online) together and how they interact with real life. They’ve gotten really popular over the years, an even released a song, complete with music video named “Do You Wanna Date my Avatar?” which a pretty cool trance song about wanting to date someone’s online gaming avatar. It’s pretty funny, but if you intend to watch it, be warned: there is a LOT of nerd talk in it. It may be hard for some to understand.

While it is funny to laugh at this apparently extreme version of nerd social interaction, isn’t it true to some degree that we all want to date someone’s avatar? No, not your level 80 Night Elf druid on World of Warcraft. I mean the avatars that we wear each and everyday. Unconsciously or not, we all create an avatar of sorts. A version of ourselves that we want everyone to see, or that we want everyone to be like. Having an avatar isn’t always good. We hide ourselves behind an imaginary mask, hoping that no one looks too closely to see that it’s a fake as a crappy Photoshop job.

But having an avatar isn’t all bad either. It gives us something to look up to, someone that we could want to be like. It keeps us from being complacent and makes us strive to become better versions of ourselves. The trouble is that we sometimes fall in love with avatars, and when we find the truth about someone we feel heart broken and betrayed. We shouldn’t. No one ever displays their true colors to the world. We all have secrets that keep us from getting hurt.

The truth is, we should avoid falling in love with someone randomly. As we wear our avatars, we must remember that others are as well. As we get to know the person behind the mask, we’ll know if we’re truly in love with them. Who knows? Maybe they are really what they seem. People can surprise you.

Until tomorrow guys!! Bye!!

  2. Jeremiahhhhhh!!! xD I think this is a great post.. but coming from the perspective that all we are is what society makes us and our personalities are really just different responses to how other people think we should act or the 'role' we are playing... do we ever really stop "wearing our avatars"? o.O
